Niall hit the guy—again—with the butt of the gun. He couldn’t think about anything or he’d get distracted. The man in front of him blinked. Niall hit him one last time, and the man dropped to the floor, halfway through the door.

He stepped back, still holding the man’s rifle. Breathing hard. Pain that had been nothing but numb warmth now crept back in. The pull of stitches in his arm. Aches and bruises. His hip smarted.

The door started to shut but stopped on the man’s unconscious body. Niall wanted to go to Haley but only glanced back at her. Every touch had brought her agony. Though she breathed as rapidly as he, she swayed with the pain of it. He could see it in her eyes. Read it on her expression. Too far gone to be able to hold back anything she was feeling.

“You came here to rescue me?”

She blinked but seemed unable to focus on him. His heart swelled with the idea she’d come here, like the cavalry, to save him. Niall had been incapacitated, and she’d made a move that was more like full-fledged team member than just a consultant.

Niall raided the man’s pockets and the pouches in his vest. He found a protein bar, two cell phones, and a set of keys. Two twenty dollar bills. He used one of the cell phones to contact Talia via text then walked to crouch in front of Haley.

He needed to get pants and a shirt off one of these guys so he could escape this place in more than just his boxers. But he also just wanted to get out of here as fast as possible, clothes or no clothes.

Thirty seconds later, the intercom crackled.

A female voice rang through, strong and sure. “This is the feds. You are completely surrounded. Exit the building in an orderly fashion and surrender yourselves.”

That was about the least official announcement he’d ever heard. This was her response to his text?

He sent another message and told her about the people in the courtyard. All of them were acting eerily similar to Haley. Clearly in discomfort over any touch. Some had gotten aggressive. Three stared through the glass at him and Haley, one banging with a fist that was now bloody.

At least one dead body lay out there. The victim of a vicious attack by another one of them. Who were they? How had the same thing happened to Haley, though with diminished effects, and not to him? Especially when he’d been the one held here?

None of this made sense. Least of all the relevance of this “lab” to the investigation.

The intercom buzzed again. “Please proceed to your nearest exit. This is for your own safety.”

She wanted them to get out. The first message had been for people who worked here. This one was for them. He could hear that edge of “just do what I say” in her tone, the one reserved for him and the other team members.

Niall zipped up the pants he’d stripped off the unconscious guy.
